Let's Get STARTED

This upcoming International Women's Day, we're celebrating the women who are making a meaningful impact at Infotrust, and within the Australian cyber security industry.

In this feature, we caught up with Laura, Head of Commercial and Operations, to explore her journey into the industry, lessons learned, and her advice for the next generation of women in technology.

What was your early educational background, and how did you end up working in Managed Tech?

My educational background is diverse, encompassing certifications in Sigma, Waterfall, and Agile project management, as well as a Master’s degree in Business. Over the past 15 years, I have gained extensive experience in telecommunications and infrastructure. Prior to joining Infotrust, I focused on the commercial and operational management of complex transition projects involving external vendors and clients. Additionally, I managed intricate IT contracts and relationships, which deepened my involvement in leveraging IT opportunities to enhance business operations. My career trajectory shifted from managing customer outcomes to overseeing vendor outcomes, and cyber security felt like a natural progression - an adjacent field offering dynamic and evolving challenges.

Tell us a bit about your role and why you enjoy it.

As the Head of Commercial and Operations for MT, I am responsible for a broad portfolio, which keeps the role engaging and dynamic. My duties include overseeing commercial operations, renewals, procurement, project management, credit management, and complaints resolution. In addition to daily business activities, I am actively involved in strategic initiatives such as the ‘Links and Lines’ project. My ability to manage this diverse portfolio is supported by an exceptional team and a highly collaborative Senior Leadership Team (SLT). I often tell my direct reports that we function as the “seat belt” for the MT business - supporting and enabling informed decisions that safeguard the broader organisation.

What are some of the pressures that come with your role, and how do you deal with stress release?

Balancing multiple responsibilities can be challenging, as I continuously prioritise urgent tasks alongside long-term strategic people management. It is easy to fall into an emergency management mindset, which can make it difficult to focus on core priorities. To manage stress - while I do thrive under pressure - I recommend a pragmatic approach: pause to take a breath, focus on what is truly important, and seek support with clarity about your needs. Additionally, taking a long walk while listening to a podcast is an effective way for me to decompress after a demanding day.

What advice would you give other women looking to enter the cyber security industry?

Having worked in traditionally male-dominated environments, I am encouraged to see more opportunities in STEM opening up for women. It is essential to recognise your own value, confidently contribute your perspectives, and speak up when you have questions or insights. Diverse teams foster creativity and drive business growth, so having a variety of voices at the table is invaluable.

What are your future career plans?

I am most fulfilled in my work when I am continuously learning and evolving in my role. I am fortunate to have a supportive leader who mentors our team while empowering us to take ownership of our responsibilities. As a mother to a little girl, my long-term ambition is to lead a not-for-profit organisation focused on empowering women.
